Bet – A bet is made when the first player places the first wager. The game begins once the bet is placed and all other bets after that build on this one until the round is over.

Call – To call means that you put in the same amount of money as the previous player. In other words, when you call you meet the other person’s bet.

Cap – In Texas Hold’em and other poker variants you get a fixed limit game. This means that only a certain number of best can be made. In most cases, this means that players can only raise four times in a single betting round.  It generally goes bet-raise-bet-cap. After that, no more bets can be made and the cards must be revealed to get a winner.

Check – To check means that you pass the action onto the next person without making a wager. In other words, if a person checks everything on the table stays the same. No new wagers are made and no new calls are made.

Community Cards – This refers to the three cards that are dealt face up once each player has received his or her two facedown cards. These three cards are used to build a five-card hand in order to win.

Dealer – The dealer is the person who is distributing cards and keeping track of the game. In casinos, this person is usually an employee with training and a keen eye for foul play.

Fold – Once the game is in play and the first person placed his or her bet, all players evaluate their cards. If they feel that the cards in hand and the community cards will not bring them a win or merit any investment they fold. They put their cards down face down and do not take part in the rest of the round.

Raise – If one player places a bet and the next player puts in more money, he or she raises. In other words, they upped the bet amount by adding to the existing amount on the table.

Poker Strategy What You Should Know - Poker Strategy: What You Should Know

Poker Strategy: What You Should Know

For beginner poker players it is important to understand the basics behind strategy. There are many more complex strategies and tips that you can have a look at here, but let’s start simple. The three basic things you need to know and understand as part of your strategy is decision-making, mathematics, and starting hands. This will get you off to a good start.

1. Good Decision-Making

The first part of your strategy has to be good decision-making. If you understand the basics of the game, the stakes and the rules, you should know what constitutes good decisions. You need to decide why you want to play poker and also what type of poker game. Do you play for fun or to win money? Do play Texas Hold’em or Seven-Card Stud? Those are things you need to decide before you start.

The smart decision-making becomes crucial in the game itself. You need to know when you should fold and when you can push it further. You need to know when you can place a bet or raise or not. If you make the smart decisions you will lose less money.

2. The Mathematics

Poker is a game of mathematics. You can work with stats, predictions, trends, etc. You don’t have all the information on the table, but you can use what you have and calculate the odds of your hand improving or of the community cards being played to your favor. If you know the math behind it, you can make smart decisions and calculate all your odds to plan your strategy and gameplay.

3. Starting Hands

An important part of your strategy is to know what a good starting hand is. You can find tips and information on this in books, online, and from other players. If you can successfully analyse your starting hand and its odds of improving, you can play a more successful game. It is part of knowing when to fold and when you have a chance of getting through the game with better cards.

4. Avoid Tilt in the Game

Tilt refers to emotional play. This is the last very important part of strategy you need to understand today. If you play emotionally, you play irrationally and you give your opponents ammunition to manipulate you. They take advantage of your emotional play and use it against you. So, when you get worked up, leave the game for a moment to cool off. It will do more harm than good to stay.

Base your beginner strategy on these points and you will be off to a good start. If you have the basics covered and get some experience, you can start looking at the more complex strategies that the pros use. For strategy tips for online poker, go here.

6 Tips on How to Become a Successful Poker Player

Instead, follow our tips on how to become a successful player and skip all the money loss. It is important to note that only a small handful of people are truly good enough to play poker for a living. You have to be a great player with a very high skill level if you want to become a pro. For more on that, read this article. But, first, let’s get into our tips for becoming a successful poker player.

Don’t be afraid to fold. Some players just play a hand to play it. This is a mistake, especially in the beginning. When you’re starting out, chances are you will have many bad hands. Play them as far as they can go, but the moment you see that your hand cannot improve and you will lose, fold. There is no shame in it and it is part of learning to play the game.

Avoid bluffing. Bluffing seems like this cool superpower, but it doesn’t work that often. When you’re just beginning, bluffing is a bad idea. You are probably playing people with a lot more experience and they will crush you. Bluffing shouldn’t be a part of your game plan. It should be an exception if the opportunity presents itself and you are sure that you can pull it off.

Avoid drinking alcohol while playing poker. You will rarely see a professional poker player drink before or during a game. Alcohol dulls the senses and that is not a good idea when playing poker. Don’t play when you’re emotional. If you had a bad day or someone made you angry or sad, don’t play. When we’re emotional we tend to be irrational. Playing irrationally is not a good plan. That is how you lose money. Only play when you are calm and stable and don’t feel like punching someone’s face in. Other players are sensitive to energy changes and emotionality and they will use that to their advantage.

Know what is on the table. It is important that you pay attention to the cards on the table. You should look at your cards and the options that may unfold. You should also look at the different options that will work with the community cards to create a winning hand. Knowing the possibilities may help you get out before you lose too much.

Pay attention to the other players. Everyone around the table is human. Even those who have trained themselves to seem calm and collected have tells and may show the slightest change in behavior. You can learn a lot by observing them. If you’re not in a hand, you can pay close attention to what the different players do in different situations.

Stick to these simple tips and you will find with your first few games. Remember, you’re a beginner. Don’t try and show up the big boys just yet.

Poker Variants How Many Do You Know - Poker Variants: How Many Do You Know?

Poker Variants: How Many Do You Know?

Poker has many different types of variants. People who are unfamiliar with poker tend to only know Texas Hold’em and not the other ones. Each type has something that is different in terms of the number of cards or the rules. Have a look at the few below and decide which one you would like to play. This will also help you understand the basic idea before you get started.

1. Texas Hold’em

The most well-known variant is Texas Hold’em. When most people talk about poker this is what they refer to. The popularity and familiarity have to do with the fact that the world poker series play this in their main events. The basic principle is that you get two cards dealt straight to you, face down. In rounds that follow three cards are placed face-up and two more are revealed as the community cards. When the fifth card has been revealed, the winner is the person with the best cards in hand.

2. Seven-Card Stud

Before Texas Hold’em became so popular, there was seven-card stud. It was more popular than poker for some time before the 21st century hit. It works on the same basic principles, except that there are no community cards. You get two cards face-down and one card face-up. You then get dealt the remaining three cards with betting in-between. The person with the best five-card hand wins the game.

3. Razz

Razz is a bit different than the previous two variants because the person with the lowest hand wins. In other words, you want to avoid pairs and high-scoring combinations. You get seven cards dealt to you with the first two and the seventh dealt facedown. The best hand you can get in Razz is Ace-2-3-4-5, also called a wheel. There are some world poker events that include Razz at their tables.

4. Omaha

Omaha differs from Texas Hold’em in two main ways. First, you get dealt four cards instead of two. Second, you must use two of those exact four starting cards to build your final hand. Omaha also has three community cards and the betting part of the game is also much like that of Texas Hold’em. The best starting hands are also different between the two games and a favorite like pocket kings for Texas Hold’em won’t be as good in Omaha.

HORSE is a mixed poker game that combines Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Razz, Seven-Card Stud, and Seven-Card Stud Eight or Better. The game basically switches between these five poker variants after every round. These games are usually played with a pre-determined sized bet. It is tricky one and definitely one that needs some practice and a very good grasp on the different types of poker and how they are different from each other.

Those are the main types of poker that you will meet in a casino or online. Try all of them and see which one you like best. Then start practising. Learn more at this resource site. Also, visit our HELPFUL LINKS page.
