Basic Poker Terminology Explained for Beginners

When you learn anything new, you need to understand the terminology involved in that activity. It’s the same deal with poker. There are some basic terms that you need to know and understand to play the game. If you don’t know what the terms mean, you can’t play the game because you won’t understand what it means. Bet – A bet is made when the first player places the first wager. The game begins once the bet is placed and all other bets after that build on this one until the round is over.

Call – To call means that you put in the same amount of money as the previous player. In other words, when you call you meet the other person’s bet.

Cap – In Texas Hold’em and other poker variants you get a fixed limit game. This means that only a certain number of best can be made. In most cases, this means that players can only raise four times in a single betting round.  It generally goes bet-raise-bet-cap. After that, no more bets can be made and the cards must be revealed to get a winner.

Check – To check means that you pass the action onto the next person without making a wager. In other words, if a person checks everything on the table stays the same. No new wagers are made and no new calls are made.

Community Cards – This refers to the three cards that are dealt face up once each player has received his or her two facedown cards. These three cards are used to build a five-card hand in order to win.

Dealer – The dealer is the person who is distributing cards and keeping track of the game. In casinos, this person is usually an employee with training and a keen eye for foul play.

Fold – Once the game is in play and the first person placed his or her bet, all players evaluate their cards. If they feel that the cards in hand and the community cards will not bring them a win or merit any investment they fold. They put their cards down face down and do not take part in the rest of the round.

Raise – If one player places a bet and the next player puts in more money, he or she raises. In other words, they upped the bet amount by adding to the existing amount on the table.

Before you start playing poker you should familiarize yourself with these terms. They will help you understand what is going on. It is wise to start by watching a few games first and hearing what the dealer and players say and do. This will put actions to the terms above.
